When a Mombasa student dropped her mobile phone into a pit latrine, she offered a substantial reward to anyone who could retrieve it, reports The Nation. But the three men who rushed to retrieve it all perished tragically in the attempt.

"First to try was radio technician Patrick Luhakha, aged 30, who was recently married," reports the paper. "Along with others he ripped up the toilet floor ... before plunging a ladder down into the pit and beginning his descent. In spite of calls for him to come up, Luhakha failed to resurface." Two more tried to rescue him but were both overcome by the ammonia fumes in the pit.

"The cell phone was not found," notes The Nation.
